Tutorial: ASX files in Windows Media Player

While RealNetworks and Apple concentrated on the open standard SMIL for authoring audiovisual presentations, Microsoft choose another way. ASX files don’t offer the same features like SMIL does. The latest version, ASX 3 supports rollover URLs, playlists, advertising, event handling or overriding metadata of ASF files. The enhanced functions of SMIL to arrange video, audio and images in timelines and on multple layers of a workspace are not part of ASX. Microsoft recommends the use of DHTML in combination with ASX to do so. Go
